Ireland’s research funding swims against tide of budget cuts

Almost 2.4 billion euros will flow into research in Ireland over the next seven years, according to the government’s revised capital spending programme. It is the larger part of a 3.8bn euro investment in science and enterprise administered by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Innovation.

Research funding worth 359 million euros announced

A major block of funding under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) has finally been announced. The 359 million euros will help make Ireland Europe’s “innovation hub” the Taoiseach Brian Cowen said at the launch on 16 July.

University fees necessary to support the smart economy

The reintroduction of fees for university education would help build the smart economy but also bring improvements to both primary and secondary education, according to an economist at University College Cork. It would shift the burden of costs to those benefitting from the expenditure on a university education, the graduates themselves.

Minister highlights Irish FP7 success as new call opens

Irish researchers have won more than 213 million euros from the EU’s 54-billion-euro Framework 7 research fund—with 55.5m euros of this going into companies based here, stated junior minister for science Conor Lenihan. He was speaking on 19 July ahead of the latest funding call under Framework 7.

Growth at software firm delivers 20 jobs

International software security firm Lumension has announced an expansion of its business that will bring 20 new jobs including IT researchers. The US company develops software used in data protection applications.
